Jan Johannes (John) baptized (LDS) 30-1-1897 at Dordrecht (or 16.5.1903 ???????) by Willem Jacobus de Brij. He leaved Holland in 1921 to the USA. He returned to Holland from 1946 - 1948 as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He wanted to contact his half-brother Jacob (van Evelingen, my father)) and Jacoba van Driel, but unfortunately they refused any contact.
A very important event in his life you can read in the following article "Miracle in Rotterdam", when John as an nearly blind boy of eleven years got back his eysight by healing through faith in a church at Rotterdam (Holland).
In Holland a remarkable case of healing was performed thtough faith. The story was translated from the Dutch Star in substance as follows:
It was on the 7th day of August, 1906 that President Smith and party arrived in Rotterdam, having come in the boat from Antwerp two days before. There was living in that city, a boy of eleven years of age, John Roothoff by name, who had suffered greatly a number of years with his eyes. His mother was a faithfull member of the Church as also was the boy, who was slowly losing his sight and was unable to attend school.
The boy said to his mother: "The Prophet has the most power of any missionary on earth. If you will take me with you to meeting and he will look into my eyes, I believe they will be healed". According to his desire he was permitted to accomany his mother to the meeting.
At the close of the meeting, as was the custom, President Smith moved towards the door and began to shake hands and speak encouragingly to the people as they passed from the hall. As John Roothoff approached him, led by his mother with his eyes bandaged, President Smith took him by the hand and spoke to him kindly. He then raised the bandage slightly and looked sympathetically into the inflamed eyes, at the same time saying in English which the boy did not understand.
However he was satitisfied. President Smith had acted according to the boy's faith; and accordingly his faith it came to pass. When he arrived home, he cried out with great joy: "Mama, my eyes are well; I can not feel any more pain. I can see fine now, and far too".
Following this event the boy was able to attend school again. When he had grown to young manhood he came to the United States to the body of the Church rejoicing in the restoration of his eyesight.
